The Royal Route

A journey to see the sights that inspired King Friedrich August II of Saxony (in Mariánské LáznÄ› 1834 – 1835).

The recommended starting point is Goethe Square near the city museum. The relatively steep uphill climb will reward you with spectacular views of Marienbad. A panorama of the valley of the springs is offered by the restored gazebo of the Mecséry lookout. The Millennium Monument is a stone reminder of the turn of the millennium. Above the Esplanade Hotel, the beauty of Mariánské LáznÄ› can be admired from the resting place of Abbot Clemetso of Teplice. The simple name of the viewpoint is the Shepherd’s Resting Place. The romantic trail is 1.6 kilometres long and in its second half passes through the more difficult terrain of Little Switzerland. The romantic grouping of large boulders and rocks of Fridchstein used to be a favourite place of King Friedrich August II of Saxony, who was fascinated by the local flora.
